Step One: The Referral Process
Every wish begins with one simple act—referring a child to Make-A-Wish. It’s how the journey from illness to inspiration officially starts. That first step, the referral, can come from anyone who knows a child facing a critical illness: a family member, friend, doctor, or even the child themselves.
Once the referral is received, the Make-A-Wish team works closely with the child’s doctors to confirm eligibility. To qualify, a child must be between 2½ and 18 years old at the time of referral and diagnosed with a critical illness. The process is designed to be simple and compassionate, ensuring families feel supported from the start.
For many parents, this first conversation is emotional. It represents a shift from fear to hope—from focusing on what their child is going through to dreaming about what’s possible next.
Step Two: The Wish Discovery
Once a child is approved, the magic starts to take shape. Specially trained volunteers, known as Wish Granters, meet with the child and their family to learn what truly makes them smile. These conversations are full of laughter, creativity, and imagination as the child begins dreaming big.
During this stage, every Wish Kid is encouraged to dream big and they are limited only by their imagination! Some imagine flying across the country, some hope to meet someone who inspires them, and others wish for something that brings joy right to their doorstep.
Our volunteers are trained to make sure that each experience reflects the “heart” of the child’s wish and that it’s truly a moment to remember.
From there, the Make-A-Wish team carefully reviews each idea to determine which wish can be safely and meaningfully granted. It’s a process rooted in compassion and possibility, where the child’s personality guides every decision.
